If demand for expeditors is constantly rising and higher education institutions can not fully satisfy logistics labor market needs, what should business do? AsstrA-Associated Traffic AG found the solution: instead of waiting, the company decided to invest into future generation itself by supporting startups and growing expeditors “come as a Padowan, become a Jedi”.
It is rare to find universities preparing expeditors even if logistics studies are present. It is important to distinguish the different between the logistics manager and the expeditor specializations. A logistics specialist is the one to order transportation and an expeditor is the one to organize it. AsstrA invests in education and training of future professionals, which mostly can not be trained in university.
“Our focus while searching for potential but yet inexperienced employees targets people who are firstly keen on foreign languages, who`s interests include cargo transportation, who wants to build their career in international corporation and who are active, attractive, open minded and flexible for change”, - says Alexandra Pakush, an HR manager at AsstrA holding in Warsaw.
During 2016 and a first quarter of 2017, AsstrA has trained 40 specialists in operational procedures while organizing international shipments in Germany, Italy, Poland, Czech republic, Lithuania, Belarus, Ukraine, Russia, Kazakhstan, Turkey, Azerbaijan and China.
Young employees are being trained by combining traditional and innovative methods from mentorship, e-books (specially designed and developed for AsstrA), e-library, workshops, video training classes and even self-education system. Last year AsstrA was nominated for international human relations award “HR-Brand of the year 2016”.
His CV was found by the security guard
It is common to invest into experienced employees for them to become even more successful. But AsstrA is active in investing into young, people with no working experience, usually students. And these are not just words. Four years ago, a security guard of the building in AsstrA office found a hand written CV by some student. And he brought this letter to the reception desk of AsstrA without telling a word. Few weeks this paper was laying on the table together with other prints until one of managers of AsstrA Poland unit accidently found it, read it and invited this young student to an interview. The name of the student is Ivan Filippov.
He came to AsstrA being age of 23 on 2013, having no experience in logistics at all. He was trained to become an expeditor. And in 3 years he became a head of Scandinavia and Finland division at AsstrA. This marvelous jump in career was lead by strong inner system of development and motivation at AsstrA.
“From the very beginning Ivan showed his high desire and ambitions to create something new and to be the best not only in AsstrA but in whole market as well. He basically opened a new market for the company; he was brave enough to defend his ideas of business transformation in front of the shareholders of the company. And he never gave up. He became a head of division by winning inner competition for this position with the best business development plan. And you know what? Now he wins a most beloved boss award in AsstrA holding”, – says A. Pakush.
Students chose AsstrA due to friendly atmosphere
From 40 young employees which were trained inside AsstrA this year, 76% tells they`ve chosen the company due to good atmosphere they felt during job interviews and while chatting with other employees of the company.
“First I was impressed how well structured and active is a website of AsstrA – in comparison with other logistics companies, which I was investigating as potential employers for me, this one is covered with up to date news and the layout is modern. She says, that during the first month of work, she realizes how different theory of expeditors work is from the reality.
“An expeditor must possess with super communicational skills and must be able to get along with other people, to be able to operate the business in the team and always stay polite and human”, - comments K. Kolomatskaya.
Another young expeditor, Daniel Hajduk, tells he chose AsstrA as an employer due to well known name and newest technologies which are being used in AsstrA.
“On the age of global technologies, it is essential for international corporations to have most innovative technologies with the professionals to use them efficiently and fast. This is why I chose AsstrA – I wanted to be able to track my personal development and to see my input into business success. AsstrA is well known for best traditions and practices in managing international transportation”, - says D. Hajduk.
Gil Georis, new comer forwarder in AsstrA France Division, says he came to the company in order to practice his language skills and to learn everything what`s need in transport sector. And he knows that AsstrA is the best teacher in the field.
“My first wish is to thoroughly know my job as a forwarder assistant and get an overall idea of how the company and its different divisions work”, - says G. Georis.
Investing in logistics startups is essential
Today’s major global freight forwarding players will face significant market share losses unless they adopt new technologies. This is why AsstrA started to invest in startups which might shape the logistics world one day very soon. First step is international “Futurepreneurs” project of innovations and entrepreneurship in Lithuania where AsstrA Vilnius unit is deeply involved in from the beginning of 2017.
